Temptation
My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. (Proverbs 1:10)
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the
devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an
hungered. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God,
command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is
written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth
out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and
setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son
of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge
concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time
thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again,
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an
exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the
glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou
wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan:
for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto
him. (Matthew 4:1-11)
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)
Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no
man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. (Romans
14:13)
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will
with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
(1 Corinthians 10:13)
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing
out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will
be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful
lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. (1 Timothy 6:7-9)
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be
tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: (James 1:13)
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in
heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much
more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might
be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom
having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye
rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: (1 Peter 1:6-8)
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith,
knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in
the world. (1 Peter 5:8-9)
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the
unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: (2 Peter 2:9) |
