Works
The
meaning is, If Abraham had been justified by works, he would have had room
to glory. But he had not room to glory. Therefore he was not justified by
works. - John Wesley
The
spirit which is pure, sincere and steadfast, is not distracted though it
hath many works to do, because it doth all things to the honour of God, and
striveth to be free from all thoughts of self-seeking. - Thomas à Kempis
Justification is withdrawn from works, not that no
good works may be done,
or that what is done may be denied to be good, but that we may not rely upon
them, glory in them, or ascribe salvation to them. - John Calvin
You said,
“I will join the church -- I will do this, that, and the other, for God’s
cause.” Are your works lasting? Do you believe your repentance will last six
months? Will it continue for twelve months? Will it last until you are wrapped
in your winding-sheet? - Charles Spurgeon |
