The Will
Of God
Only
those who try to live near God and have formed the habit of faithfulness to Him
in the small things of our daily life, can hope in times of need for that
special light which shows us our path. To do as well as we can the job
immediately before us, is the way to learn what we ought to do next. - Evelyn
Underhill
Let a man set his heart
only on doing the will of God and he is instantly free. If we understand our
first and sole duty to consist of loving God supremely and loving everyone, even
our enemies, for God's dear sake, then we can enjoy spiritual tranquility under
every circumstance. - A. W. Tozer
There are two kinds of
people: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says,
"All right, then, have it your way." - C. S. Lewis
The will of God is
never exactly what you expect it to be. It may seem to be much worse, but in the
end it's going to be a lot better and a lot bigger. - Elisabeth Elliot
Ye have enemies; for who can live on this earth without them? Take heed to
yourselves: love them. In no way can thy enemy so hurt thee by his violence, as
thou dost hurt thyself if thou love him not. And let it not seem to you
impossible to love him. Believe first that it can be done, and pray that the
will of God may be done in you. For what
good can thy neighbor's ill do to thee? If he had no ill, he would not even be
thine enemy. - Augustine of Hippo
Every true prayer has its background and its foreground. The foreground of
prayer is the intense, immediate desire for a certain blessing which seems to be
absolutely necessary for the soul to have; the background of prayer is the
quiet, earnest desire that the will of God, whatever it may be, should be done.
- Phillips Brooks
All the contention between the flesh and the Spirit lies in this, whether God
shall have His will or we have ours. Now God's will is straight but ours is
crooked, and therefore if
God will have us offer up our Isaac we must submit to Him, and even acquiesce in
the whole will of God. The more (through grace) emptied of self, the more free
and happy we shall be by being more subject to God, for in what measure we
part with anything for Him we shall receive even in this world an hundredfold in
joy and peace. - Richard Sibbes |
