Pride
There
is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which every one in the world
loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except
Christians ever imagine that they are guilty themselves....The essential vice,
the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that,
are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the
devil; Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of
mind... As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always
looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking
down, you cannot see something that is above you. - C. S. Lewis
It
horribly skews the meaning of the cross when contemporary prophets of
self-esteem say that the cross is a witness to my infinite worth... The biblical
perspective is that the cross in a witness to the infinite worth of God's glory,
and a witness to the immensity of the sin of my pride. - John Piper
Sin is not confined to the evil things we do. It is the evil within us, the evil
which we are. Shall we call it our pride or our laziness, or shall we call it
the deceit of our life? Let us call it for once the great defiance which turns
us again and again into the enemies of God and of our fellowmen, even of our own
selves. - Karl Barth
It is not the greatness of your sins, but your pride of
heart that forbids your
salvation. It is not anything in your past life, but it is your present state of
mind that makes your salvation impossible. - Charles Finney
We do not very often
come across opportunities for exercising strength, magnanimity, or magnificence;
but gentleness, temperance, modesty, and humility, are graces which ought to
colour everything we do. There may be virtues of a more exalted mould, but...
these are the most continually called for in daily life. - Francis de Sales
The grand obstacle to the salvation of the scribes and Pharisees was their
pride, vanity and self-love. They lived on each other's praise. If they had
acknowledged Christ as the only good teacher, they must have given up the good
opinion of the multitude; and they chose rather to lose their souls than to
forfeit their reputation among men! - Adam Clarke
We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been
preserved these many years in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers,
wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God
... We have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these
blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel
the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God
that made us! - Abraham Lincoln
"God
opposes the proud" (1 Peter 5: 5). This verse shows God's sharp verdict against
the proud, for there can scarcely be anything worse than having God not only
withdraw His grace from us but even flatly oppose us. Perhaps we complain that
we are so spiritually dead, that we have difficulties praying, that God does not
answer our prayers. This may be the reason. Because of our pride God opposes us
and refuses to answer. Or perhaps we seem to be pursued by misfortune. We cannot
succeed in anything we undertake no matter how hard we try. Why? God cannot
bless us, because our pride has closed the door to Him. - Basilea Schlink
So long as
we are full of self, we are shocked at the faults of others. Let us think often
of our own sin, and we shall be lenient to the sins of others. - François
Fénelon
