The
Christian Life
Bad
will be the day for every man when he becomes absolutely contented with the life
he is leading, with the thoughts he is thinking, with the deeds he is doing;
when there is not forever beating at the doors of his soul some great desire to
do something larger, which he knows that he was meant and made to do because he
is still, in spite of all, the child of God. - Phillips Brooks
The
secret of living a life of excellence is merely a matter of thinking thoughts of
excellence. Really, it's a matter of programming our minds with the kind of
information that will set us free. - Charles R. Swindoll
What
cause have they who have an interest in Christ, to glory in their Redeemer! They
are often beset with many evils, and many mighty enemies surround them on every
side, with open mouths ready to devour them. But they need not fear any of them.
They may glory in Christ, the rock of their salvation, who appears so gloriously
above them all. They may triumph over Satan, over this evil world, over guilt,
and over death. For as their Redeemer is mighty, and is so exalted above all
evil, so shall they also be exalted in him, They are now, in a sense, so
exalted. For nothing can hurt them. Christ carries them, as on eagle's wings,
high out of the reach of all evils, so that they cannot come near them, to do
them any real harm. - Jonathan Edwards
The
Christian and the carnal man are most wonderful to each other. The one wonders
to see the other walk so strictly, and deny himself to those carnal liberties
that the most take.... And the Christian thinks it strange that men should be so
bewitched, and still remain children in the vanity of their turmoil, wearying
and humouring themselves from morning to night, running after stories and
fancies, and ever busy doing nothing; wonders that the delights of earth and sin
can so long entertain and please men, and persuade them to give Jesus Christ so
many refusals—to turn from their life and happiness, and choose to be miserable,
yea, and take much pains to make themselves miserable. - Robert Leighton
Sorrows,
because they are lingering guests, I will entertain but moderately, knowing that
the more they are made of the longer they will continue: and for pleasures,
because they stay not, and do but call to drink at my door, I will use them as
passengers with slight respect. He is his own best friend that makes the least
of both of them. - Joseph Hall
The
divine Instructor has taken us under his wing and he is putting us through our
exercises so that hands which hang down can be lifted up, and feet are
straightened out, and a lame man is helped to walk. The Instructor is saying
such things as, now "Keep moving, don't let yourself get stiff, keep the joints
moving, keep them as supple as you can. - Martyn Lloyd-Jones
The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep
discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, "O
God, forgive me," or "Help me." - Billy Graham
When
a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles. When he
stops studying the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil
shouts for joy - Corrie Ten Boom
Here
is the truly Christian life, here is faith really working by love: when a man
applies himself with joy and love to the works of that freest servitude, in
which he serves others voluntarily and for naught; himself abundantly satisfied
in the fulness and richness of his own faith. - Martin Luther
Our
critical day is not the very day of our death, but the whole course of our life;
I thank him, that prays for me when my bell tolls; but I thank him much more,
that catechizes me, or preaches to me, or instructs me how to live. - John
Donne
In
the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there has
never been another day just like today, and there will never be another just
like it again. Today is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading
since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows will
proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious today
is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are aware of how precious it
is, you can hardly be said to be living at all. - Frederick Buechner
