The
Bible
God,
in His great mercy, gave us THE SCRIPTURES. He has not left us to grope our way
in darkness, but has provided us with a lamp for our feet and a light for our
path. Nor are we left to our own unaided powers in the study of the Word. We are
supplied with an infallible Instructor. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, "Ye have
an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things ... the anointing ye have
received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you" (1 John
2:20, 27). - A. W. Pink
I believe the
Bible is the word of
God from cover to
cover. I believe that the man who magnifies the word of God in his preaching is
the man whom God will honor. Why do such names stand out on the pages of history
as Wesley, Whitefield, Finney and Martin Luther? Because of their fearless
denunciation of all
sin,
and because they preach
Jesus
Christ without fear or
favor. -
Billy Sunday
Christ is the Master;
the Scriptures are only the servant. The true way to test all the Books is to
see whether they work the will of Christ or not. No Book which does not preach
Christ can be apostolic, though Peter or
Paul were its author. And no Book which
does preach Christ can fail to be apostolic, although Judas, Ananias, Pilate, or
Herod were its author. - Martin Luther
A chasm is opening between the men who believe their Bibles and the men who are
prepared for an advance upon Scripture. Inspiration and speculation cannot long
abide in peace. Compromise there can be none. We cannot hold the inspiration of
the Word, and yet reject it; we cannot believe in the
atonement and deny it; we
cannot hold the doctrine of the fall and yet talk of the evolution of spiritual
life from human nature; we cannot recognize the
punishment of the impenitent and
yet indulge the "larger hope." One way or the other we must go. Decision is the
virtue of the hour. - Charles Spurgeon
Here
is the great evangelical disaster - the failure of the evangelical world to
stand for truth as truth. There is only one word for this -- namely
ACCOMMODATION. The evangelical church has accommodated to the world spirit of
the age. First, there has been accommodation on Scripture, so that many who call
themselves evangelicals hold a weakened view of the Bible and no longer affirm
the truth of all the Bible teaches. This accommodation has been costly, first in
destroying the power of the Scriptures to confront the spirit of our age;
second, in allowing the further slide of our culture. - Francis Shaeffer
The Holy Scriptures were not given to us that we should enclose them in
books, but that we should engrave them upon our hearts. - John Chrysostom
Voltaire expected that within fifty years of his lifetime there would not be
one Bible in the world. His house is now a distribution center for Bibles in
many languages. - Corrie Ten Boom
Sink the Bible to the bottom of the ocean, and still man's obligations to
God would be unchanged. He would have the same path to tread, only his lamp and
guide would be gone; the same voyage to make, but his chart and compass would be
overboard! - Henry Ward Beecher
How
encouraging are the examples the Bible gives us of good people! It tells us of
many who were of like passions with ourselves-men and women who had cares,
crosses, families, temptations, afflictions, diseases, like ourselves-and yet
"through faith and patience inherited what has been promised," and got safely
home. It keeps back nothing in the history of these people. Their
mistakes, their weaknesses, their conflicts, their experience, their prayers,
their praises, their useful lives, their happy deaths-all are fully recorded.
And it tells us the God and Savior of these men and women is still the same
today as yesterday, and still waits to be gracious. - J. C. Ryle
The
Bible is the written word of God, and because it is written it is confined
and limited by the necessities of ink and paper and leather. The Voice of
God, however, is alive and free as the sovereign God is free. "The words
that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life." The life is in
the speaking words. God's word in the Bible can have power only because it
corresponds to God's word in the universe. It is the present Voice which
makes the written Word all-powerful. - A. W.
Tozer
I
study my Bible as I gather apples. First, I shake the whole tree that the
ripest might fall. Then I shake each limb, and when I have shaken each limb,
I shake each branch and every twig. Then I look under every leaf. -
Martin Luther
I
am perfectly convinced that whatever the gospels are they are not legends. I
have read a great deal of legend and I am quite clear they are not that sort of
thing....Christ bent down and scribbled in the dust with His finger. Nothing
comes of this. No one has based any doctrine on it. And the act of inventing
little irrelevant details to make an imaginary scene more convincing is purely a
modern art. - C. S. Lewis
One
of these days some simple soul will pick up the Book of God, read it, and
believe it. Then the rest of us will be embarrassed. - Leonard Ravenhill |
